The Mamba has been Razer’s flagship mouse for years, and the company recently introduced a new wireless version (See it on Amazon). Both sides sport a rubber grip to keep your hand in place, and the horizontal textures on both sides feels great as it slides into your palm. The Mamba is fairly lightweight, with a high and wide profile that will appeal to palm grippers. If you’re a claw gripper, like I am, you might not find it very comfortable—I found the sides to be too wide, which caused my thumb to hurt after using the mouse for a while. This may not affect everyone—it depends on the size of your hands and your grip style—but it was a definite low point for me.

On the bottom, you’ll find a small compartment that houses the USB receiver for easy storage. The Mamba also comes with an extension cable in case you need better reception, though I didn’t find this necessary. Unlike last year’s Mamba, there’s no charging dock—just a USB charging cable. Unlike some mice, though—which make the charging cable feel like a burden when it’s plugged in—the Mamba’s high quality braided cable plugs into a recessed socket, making it feel like a regular wired gaming mouse whenever you’re charging.
This year’s model also eschews the Mamba’s old laser sensor for Razer’s 5G Advanced Optical Sensor, which many people have been clamoring for (since laser sensors can be a bit more “wonky” at times). It still has the same 100 - 16,000 DPI sensitivity range and customizable polling rate up to 1000Hz (1ms), so you can dial in the exact settings that work for you.

As far as features go, there's not much to talk about aside from what I previously discussed. You won’t find the plethora of goodies that we loved about last year’s Mamba, like the customizable click force, tilt wheel, and included charging dock. This year’s model is more affordable, which is nice, but it leaves the value proposition a bit more up for debate—especially when you consider Razer’s reputation for not-so-great quality control. I didn’t have any problems with my review unit, but if you do, Razer’s mice have a two-year warranty.

Razer Mamba Wireless – Software

Razer’s new Synapse 3 software is where you’ll adjust your mouse’s settings, and it’s..okay if I’m being generous. Feature-wise, it checks the important boxes: You can record macros and assign them to any of the Mamba’s seven mouse buttons, customize your lighting with different effects, choose when the mouse goes to sleep, and customize the sensitivity “just so” (even setting different values for the X and Y axes of movement). You can even create different profiles for different games, which can be stored in the cloud via your Razer account or on the mouse’s onboard storage.

Unfortunately, Synapse can be wonky. I had issues with macros not recording properly, creating new profiles for my mouse or keyboard inexplicably, or hanging when I launched the app. When that happened, I had to reboot my entire PC to get it working. And even if you don’t run into these issues, you may find certain aspects of its interface confusing—not to mention it’s awfully annoying that you’re forced to create an account and use the software for everything. In fact, your custom lighting effects don’t even work unless the software is running—those preferences aren’t saved to internal storage along with the rest of your profile, which is just dumb.
All in all, I like the number of options Synapse provides; I just didn’t like the act of using Synapse to tweak them. Once you get your settings dialed in, hopefully you won’t have to deal with it too much. But at this point in the game, Razer’s software should be better than this.

Razer Mamba Wireless – Gaming

The Mamba may not be full of decadent hardware features, and it’s software isn’t great, but when it come to performance, it proves itself worthy. Tracking worked fantastically on both my mousepad and a bare wood desk, and its lightweight design made quick movements easy and fluid. While some mice can make you feel like you’re flailing about aimlessly in fast-paced games like Doom, the Mamba tracked exactly where I wanted to go, every time.
Its shallow mouse buttons were perfect for quick trigger fingers, and the rubber on the side is comfortable and grippy (even if the mouse’s actual shape didn’t work for me). And, even though I’m not usually a fan of wireless mice, I was impressed with its performance when untethered—I couldn’t even tell I if it was wired or wireless, which was great.

RGB lighting on a mouse is more for looks than usability, but Razer has built certain lighting profiles into its software for some games—a nice touch. When launching Doom, for example, the Razer keyboard I was testing initiated a “Fire” animation and my mouse breathed shades of red and yellow, preparing me for my descent into Hell.There were a few things I didn’t love, however. The scroll wheel felt a little “looser” than I’d like, and doesn’t “click” into place as heavily as some mice (like the Logitech G502, for example). This make it feel a bit too sensitive and imprecise. The DPI buttons below the wheel are kind of difficult to reach as well, which is problematic if you want to assign those buttons to in-game functions other than DPI adjustments.

Battery life is really the Mamba’s banner feature, with Razer boasting up to 50 hours. In my experience, this may not be too far off—I used it wirelessly all day at my home office for work, for an entire week, and only after that did it start to show the battery was getting low. That means it’s less likely to run out of juice at the least opportune moment in a game, and even if you have to tether up before you start playing, the cable shouldn’t hamper your experience too much.

The Mamba performed admirably at everything it did; I just wish it did more. After using mice with more buttons, more adjustability, and better software, I feel like even its reduced price of $100 is a little steep for a mouse this basic (and with software this frustrating). Our favorite wireless gaming mouse, the Logitech G903, is only $15 more—and it has a lot more to offer (apart from its lower sensitivity of 12,000 DPI, but that’s more than enough for most people). Alternatively, you could get a similarly basic gaming mouse similar to the 2018 Mamba for less money. The Mamba is a good mouse, it just isn’t the best value for everyone when compared to its competitors.
